Episode 13: The Finale
Narrator: Over the course of the 51st season we have received unprecedented access to the Ello Ello cycling team, chatting to their management and riders on a weekly basis to see the inner workings of a successful cycling team. For Ello Ello season 51 was earmarked as a season of change as the team started to transition from it’s ageing superstar riders to a younger group of riders. In the final week of the season the team received one final chance to show this transition with Brock Moeller, a 23 year old who hasn’t been at the team for a full year given the chance to lead the team at the Coppa della Famiglia del Don a recently set up series of races entered around hilly stages across Europe.
**Day 1**
Placido Maciel (coach): After all our emphasis on studying tour races to find marginal improvements this race provides something a bit different and requires all out effort on every stage since the points on offer are so set in stone. The team we have here represents our strongest hill team which does put us at a disadvantage since only two of them is what anyone would call a hill specialist so over the next few years we need to invest in this.
Brock Moeller (rider) - post stage (3rd): *Is visibly smiling from ear to ear*, that was pretty unbelievable, I came into the cup thinking this race would maybe be my best chance for a good finish but to get the podium was a huge surprise including beating some of the veterans that I looked up to growing up, when Hetland started riding I was just 8 so to beat him today in only my 2nd proper race was great. I’d come into this just wanting to finish top 9 in the cup so this puts me pretty well positioned.
**Day 2**
Brock Moeller - post stage (19th): I’d kind of wanted more today, I’m a decent sprinter and so when I got to the finish in a big group I backed myself to finish top 10 but once I’d started sprinting I just couldn’t push hard enough and I was just going backwards, but I’m still in a decent position for the GC.
**Day 3**
Brock Moeller - immediately post stage (7th): I can’t believe I’m saying this but I think I’ve finished 3rd overall, there’s a few riders that are going to make this close but apparently my rivals came too far back and I’ve jumped up to 3rd.
*Official looking person turns up and after a brief discussion Brock leaves with him*
*An excited Brock returns 30 mins or so later*
Brock: So I was 3rd! I just went to the final GC podium and it’s been confirmed that I did enough today for the podium, and, completely by surprise it turns out there’s a secret competition for young riders that I won by 62 points so I’m now the owner of this strange meerkat in a hat thing which sure beats the toys I get for comparing insurance *proceeds to reveal funny meerkat statue* and I’m not sure they meant to give it to me but if I can get a plane out of here soon then they’re never getting it back!
Narrator: Whilst Brock Moeller’s result is a huge positive for a team trying to develop youth Brock is still only the 3rd most successful youth rider on the team. Daniel Sammut Castelletti, a protagonist of the mid season was the 2nd after winning the team’s major goal of the Valpa YC but it was young Bangladeshi rider, Sadiq Chakraborty who was the most successful.
Henri (manager): Sadiq is probably our biggest success this season. At the start of the season we came incredibly close to trying to sell him but he’s been an incredibly consistent rider this season and from 6 chances he’s finished in the points 5 times. Points wise only Rudi Basa picked up more and so we’ll be excited to see him build on that as he gets a bit older. He’s already the most successful Bangladeshi rider in history and so we’ll be looking to stretch that lead further.
Narrator: As the season ends 9 different riders have found success for Ello Ello this season with Geo Anamia and Iancu Raducioiu almost freezed out of being captains due to the influx of youth, the team has fully trained two young riders including new star Moeller and Zhai Wenbin looks set to be trained over the next few months.
Henri (manager): Whilst season 51 was a step down from season 50 I’m already feeling more confident of future success, we have a new superstar, some very solid other young potential captains and we’ve got money to invest, Ello Ello is in a really good spot right now, but we still want more.
